About the Opera

Fellow Travelers follows recent college graduate Timothy Laughlin as he arrives in 1950s Washington, D.C., ready to join the fight against Communism. A chance encounter with the charismatic State Department official Hawkins Fuller leads to Tim’s first job—and his first romantic relationship with a man.

As Tim struggles to reconcile love with political pressure, personal identity, and religious beliefs, Hawkins comes under the watchful eye of McCarthyism and faces charges that could cost him his job and his freedom. Both men must make difficult choices as they try to survive the Lavender Scare.

The New York Times cited Fellow Travelers among “The Best Classical Music of 2016,” calling it “heart-wrenching.” This production launches a national effort to bring the story to opera stages across the country—and honors those who were banned from government employment and targeted by investigations because of their sexuality.
